pwvrr.webs.comVery good show.
Some comments on what Marty was saying on crew sizes. 1) I have 9 throttles that can be used that sets the amount of operators that I invite with exceptions. During Prototype rails in Jan. we operate two layouts on the same day. John Wilkes L&N in the morning/afternoon and mine in the evening and we have up to 15 people, but that is the exception. I just had a op session with out of town group and it was less than 9 and I had 7 including the dispatcher. Certain positions have to be filled,Rook Yard, Ingram Yard(steel) and steel mill crew( 1person)and Dispatcher. The other guys filled in the other jobs. 2) In 17 session this was the first that I got to operate. I took a Ore extra that runs the complete railroad. The change I made to do this was in the car cards. I had redone them so the top line say's were the town the train is going to. Then the interchange if need be or the industry on the next line. I got very few questions and that has keep me from operating. I do really like to see the railroad come to life. But I love to operate too. 3)I too was nervous about dispatching some one else layout and it now is the part I really like to do. No one else would dispatch Johns so I did it for his first Op session. We use two dispatchers on his railroad, The L&N and Southern. I took the Southern. I got my first lession, do not give authority to a train over the complete railroad. It jammed everything up. Lession Learned.!! Only give small sections at a time .We both use track warrents to controll the railroads. Tom Wilson Pittsburgh & West Virginia RR and Union RR |

Good show, and having this broadcast available early in the week brought a sense of normality.
It's great Ryan has Tim and others who can carry the show without him in the pinch. Also, the show's absence of "uuhs," umms" and "you knows" so prevalent in American speech is a relief. Thanks! |

Thanks folks for another fine show. Tim you're doing a great job. Jay did another good job with some good questions to the guest. Marty - thank you for letting it all hang out there - it helps to get us slow ones to get off the chair and do some both modeling and work on our layouts - no matter how small or incomplete.
If I weren't already working on a Brooklyn Waterfront layout, I would be doing the CV (I only live 1600 feet from the line here in Northfield). The oldest RR station in the state is here in Northfield, and it was once the HQ of the CV until 1853. Gil, known as Bill somedays ... |

model-railroad-hobbyist.com/blog/chrisNHJust to comment on our experience with layout owners as operators..
I have not been to an operating session yet where the layout owner was operating unless we had very few people who all knew what they were doing. Several have expressed to me that they like watching other people operate their layouts. What I have seen in my experience is: 1. Layout owners who don't want to operate.. prefer to watch 2. Layout owners with high maintenance layouts who need to keep moving to trouble 3. Layout owners too busy helping the inevitable newbie(s). 4. Layout owners who do operate but to fill a void on a low attendance night. Perhaps because I am usually a guest my experience is skewed. The two layouts I operate on weekly and/or monthly that are part of the round robin group (others like mine are under construction..) the layout owners seem to enjoy watching others operate their creation... Personally, I like the idea of operating my layout (when its built..) when people are over to operate. It is encouraging to me that Marty's group has owner-operators and that it is not anathema for the owner to run a train. Chris |
