www.ironsaddcasts.mypodcast.comWow guys- as always wonderful show. Ryan some great producing and engineering here, Guys what a great idea to take a breath fomr the "oddessys" and concentrate on something like the caboose; it was a well rounded show and really very enjoyable- Jay great to have you back on the show again- and our hearts go out to the family of the B-52's crew. Man I feel like I didn't really know to much about cabooses guys- this show gave all that was needed; I do think I might have been able to whittle down my branchline piece a bit, I think I prattled a little. Also- editing wise, Ryan that segue piece into TRYTH was really quite nice.
Will, I'm doing more research but from what I have been able to tell, an electric loco can go into overdrive simply by limiting the stepping-down of voltage by the transformer- thus the traction motors are getting more of the raw voltage of the catenary which naturally has a current that should be much greater than an engine would require. Traditionally they did this on start up- but apparently some engines could maintain it for longer periods, the P-5 and the GG1 among them. Generally speaking though, after the train is moving there wouldn't be much of a reason to remain in overload- unless a grade was encountered. Guys wonderful stuff- thanks again! Alright- here's a criticism, in the show notes it should be "TRYTH"... only lately it's been "TYRTH"... ok I'll shut-up now. |

Another enjoyable show as always.
1972: Hurricane Agnes hits the north eastern and dumps massive amounts of rainfall over the Mid Atlantic states, washing away bridges and train tracks and further weakening the bankrupt North East railroads. A number of smaller routes would never see service again after the flooding of the Susquehanna River. |

Excellent show guys! I really enjoyed the rundown on cabooses...I miss seeing them.
I'm not really a huge fan of the FRED. Just more function over form (and I HATE that!) TRYTH 1972: January - General Motors Electro-Motive Division introduces the EMD SD40-2, the first EMD diesel to feature a computer control system. They would become standard after that. August - The Illinois Central Railroad and the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad merge to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. September - Revenue service begins on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in the San Francisco Bay Area. A tragic October 30th The driver of a fast train does not notice a stop signal due to heavy fog and collides with another train in Schweinsburg-Culten, East Germany. 22 die and 70 are injured. Then in a sererate incident on the same day - Illinois Central Gulf commuter rail crash - The accidental tripping of a signal at 27th Street Station in Chicago, Illinois causes an IC Electric express train to telescope another, killing 45 and injuring over 300. Also in 1972: The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Western Maryland Railway become parts of the Chessie System. The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway is officially merged into the Chicago and North Western Railway railroad. |

www.tamvalleyrr.comAnother great show. I really liked the theme of the show! I mean, who doesn't like cabooses. This brings up a point not addressed in the show - *what* is the plural of caboose - cabooses, caboose, or cabeese? The plural of goose is geese and the plural of moose is moose. Oh wise ones, help me out.

Great show, fellas. I liked the caboose operations section. I'm going to have to try out Train Dispatcher.... that looks fun!
1972: On June 15, Worthington Smith became President of the Milwaukee Road, leaving the CB&Q. 1972: Electrification service on the Milwaukee Road Coast Division ended |

Great show as always! Keep it up.
1972: May - Burlington Northern retires the last of their Alco FA's. These were the last active FA's in regular freight revenue service in the US. |

Hi Guys –
Finally got a chance to say how much I enjoy the show and for the past show, I especially enjoyed the caboose discussion. Fondly remember seeing them many a time on a branch of the Erie Lackawanna near my house. As for 1972, BART was already mentioned but as an FYI regular passenger service began on September 11th and on the September 26th President Nixon rode the system. On November 4, 1972, a boxcar of a train heading west on the CNJ mainline struck the Penn Central’s north east corridor (NEC) bridge resulting in massive derailment that tore up 600 feet of track and destroyed the westbound side of the Elizabeth, NJ CNJ station. Luckily the derailment occurred on a Saturday and no one was seriously injured. At the time of the derailment, there were 4 tracks on the mainline and the train had been routed on the wrong track (track 4), which did not have enough clearance to allow over-sized trains to pass under the NEC bridge. Riding on the NEC today you can still see the eastbound passenger platform and CNJ terminal in Elizabeth (though the tracks are long gone). Jay, my condolences also to the families of the B-52 crew. Looking forward to the next show! |

Another great show guys. I loved hearing about cabooses. I'm sorry, but a train is just not a train without a caboose! Go away Fred!
It looks like 1972 had a lot of train wrecks. Oct. 6, 1972 a train carrying religious pilgrims derails and catches fire in Saltillo, Mexico. 208 people killed. |
